Wednesday, March 29 Exelon Corp. revealed it’s plans to clean up groundwater containing radioactive tritium at the Braidwood nuclear plant in rural Will County. The plant has leaked millions of gallons of tritium-laced water into the ground several times since 1996 and has recently been accused of failing to properly maintain the underground pipeline. And though they claimed that the leaks caused no danger to Chicago citizens, the work is to be done. During the clean-up the groundwater containing tritium will be directed to the pond, which belongs to the company, and then emptied through an underground pipe into the Kankakee River, where water containing tritium is legally dumped.
